In technical fields like IT and engineering, your skills are critical, but how you talk about them matters just as much. Here are three ways candidates often undersell themselves—and how you can flip the script.

Using “Just”
Saying, “I’m just a software developer” minimizes the complexity and importance of your role.
Instead, try:
“I’m a software developer who builds scalable solutions to optimize performance and enhance user experience.”
Remember Steve Jobs once said, “The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.” Never diminish the impact of your work.

Using “But”
Saying, “I don’t have cloud computing experience, but…” sets you up to sound less prepared. The word “but” negates your strengths.
Instead, say:
“While I haven’t worked directly in cloud computing, my experience in system architecture equips me with the knowledge to learn and apply those skills quickly.”

Using “Only”
Phrases like, “I’ve only worked in DevOps for a year” undercut the value of your time.
Instead, highlight:
“In just one year in DevOps, I automated key processes that reduced deployment time by 40%.”

By removing words like “just,” “but,” and “only,” you can present yourself with the confidence your skills deserve. Take charge in your next interview and demonstrate the full range of your abilities. If you are interested in applying for one of our open positions, please send your resume to careers@thenuleap.com or call 614-349-6781.
